Tips on How to Use a Lithium Portable Jump Starter
Getting stranded is not something most people look forward to, especially when it is their vehicle that decided to be uncooperative. Luckily for you, you thought ahead and have with you a nice, shiny lithium portable jump starter to work with.
But how do you use it?
1. Check the Charge
Cranking over an engine takes a lot of power from the battery, sometimes a battery is totally discharged just from a single cranking session. In this case, if your battery is not fully charged, then you will struggle to jump start the vehicle.
2. Get Down to Brass Tacks
• Turn off the engine and pop the hood.
• Ensure the jump starter is off before connecting the leads. Identify the positive (red) terminal and the negative (black).
• First, you will attach the positive lead to the positive terminal of the battery. For the negative, attach it to an unpainted surface such as the engine block.
• Once the cables are firmly in place, proceed to turn on the portable jump starter.
• Now, attempt to start the car. If it turns on, let it run for 30 minutes. If not, do not crank the car for more than 5 seconds. If the car does not start after four or five attempts, you may need to try a different jump starter.
• Once the car turns on, turn off the jump starter. To unclamp it, you will first need to unclamp the negative lead from the engine block, and then remove the positive lead from the battery.
• Ensure you recharge the portable jump starter as soon as you get home. Some models may need 12 going on to 24 hours to fully charge.
